Organizing Networks Case Studies

Redressing Patch Cords in a Distribution Frame

Commercial Business

Motives for the Project

  • Redressing the patch cords was necessary for access to the switch’s fans.
  • Organized patch cords help to streamline common network tasks which can save time and resources.
  • Disorganization can lead to accidental disconnections which can be difficult to detect resulting in longer down times

Project Limitations

  • The wire manager designed specifically for this switch was no longer available.
  • The budget permitted the redressing of network patch cords even though other cables are in need of organization.

Slim patch cords were used in this redressing project. These cables are very useful in high density areas because they take up less space in a rack which makes it easier for personnel to identify individual switch ports.

Distribution Frame Cleanup

Residential

Motives for the Project

  • Organization is required in order to close the cabinet door.
  • The network no longer serves the same purpose it once did and should reflect its current use.
  • Organizing this cabinet will help prevent accidental disconnections, costly repairs, device replacements, and general frustration.

Project Limitations

  • This project was performed without a prior visit to the site.
  • Most of the materials were reused instead of installing upgraded materials for the various network connections and cable management.
  • The time frame of this project was for half a day of service.

With more time additional organization standards could have been performed such as cable test results, labels, network documentation, etc.

Cable & Equipment Installations Case Studies

Video Surveillance Installation Project

Small Commercial Business

Background Information

  • RKDGS first visited this site for the following reasons.
    • Troubleshoot a damaged digital video recorder (DVR)
    • Relocate existing cameras
    • Install additional cameras
  • The DVR, which sat loosely on a shelf, was damaged and required replacement.
  • RKDGS strategically chose a hybrid video recorder by Alibi Security.
    • The Alibi Vigilant hybrid video appliance, chosen for this project, has enough analog channels to connect all of the existing analog cameras and additionally supports recordings of additional IP cameras.

Distribution Frame Notes

  • This rack contains all video surveillance cables and equipment.
  • The Coaxial cables (for analog cameras) connect directly to the back of the recorder.
  • The Ethernet cables that connect to IP cameras connect to the network switch.
  • The video appliance is connected to the network switch which allows the cameras to communicate to the video appliance.
  • The network switch and the hybrid video recorder receive power from the power distribution unit (PDU) mounted in the rack.
  • The drawer (labeled documentation) contains video surveillance documentation, extra materials, and equipment manuals.
  • A blank panel covers the back of the rack in order to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Labels are provided on various cables, equipment, and on the rack for simplifying identification and maintaining organization.
  • In order to prevent damage and connection issues, all cables in the rack are given strain relief.

Camera Notes

  • These cameras are the additional cameras installed after the new video appliance active.
  • All cameras were installed to the manufacturers specifications in order to receive warranties and maximize each cameras lifespan.
  • Each camera has a service loop of excess cable for future adjustability.

The recommended type of rack varies from site to site and depends on existing equipment, distribution frame location(s), and more.
